Case Study Serie 2: Istanbul Airport Project
  • 16 Jun 2022

Even if the planes are designed to withstand all kinds of weather conditions, the plane must be clear of frost, ice or snow during take-off for a safe flight. Otherwise, serious accidents may occur. For this purpose, we managed the valve automation process with TORK actuators in de-icing operations at the Istanbul airport, which is one of the newly established major airports in Turkey.

What is De-/Anti-Icing Operations?

While the airplanes are in the air, hot air coming from the engines or electric heaters prevent icing on the wings and engines. However, this system cannot be used while the plane is on the ground and the snow and ice that may collect on the wings and upper surfaces of the plane cannot be cleaned. De- / anti-icing processes are used to prevent icing and snow deposits to ensure smooth launch of the aircraft. Thanks to this process, the plane surface is free from snow and ice.

The process of cleaning the existing pollution is de-icing, and the process to keep the clean plane clean for a certain period of time until the take-off and icing conditions disappear is called anti-icing.

In cases where anti- / de-icing operations are not applied, frost, ice or snow can lead to dangerous consequences such as loss of aerodynamic performance, reduced mobility, sensor blockage and power loss in engines. Therefore, anti- / de-icing processes have an important place for aircraft safety..

İstanbul Airport Valve Automatoin Process

TORK electric actuators were used in anti-icing operations in İstanbul Airport, the world's largest airport project in Istanbul. In the project, automation was provided with about 90 electric actuator valves to ensure safe flight in the airspace.
